With sadness, the family of Doreen Hughes, age 55 years, formerly of Souris, announces her peaceful passing at the Souris Hospital on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011. She leaves to mourn, her mother Sadie Labchuk and step-father Steve; her father James Hughes and step-mother Trudy; her sister Darlene White (Raymond), nephew Kurtis; her brother Wade Hughes (Denise) and niece Ellen Marie. She is also survived by step-sisters and brothers, Blake, Kevin, Derek and Sharon Labchuk, Colleen Woodside, Gail Doyle and Jonathon Corbett, and their families. She was predeceased by her grandparents, James and Olive MacCormack; and Wade and Ellen Hughes. She also leaves to mourn many aunts and uncles, cousins and countless friends. Doreen was a graduate of St. F.X. University in 1977 with a B.Sc. and in 1978 with a B.Ed. She also graduated from the University of Alberta School of Nursing in 1992 with a Diploma in Nursing. She has worked as an RN in many hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. Doreen’s journey through life was guided by her love for the Lord. She was a person of honesty, integrity and compassion. Doreen was an inspirational soul and quietly went about her life impacting the lives of so many. She was blessed with a wonderful sense of humour and met the challenges of her illness with grace and dignity. Doreen also found time to extend her commitment to the Lord through missionary work in Malawi and Guatemala. In recent weeks, despite her battle with cancer, she provided all those around her with her usual smile, joy, and zest for life. She was at peace upon passing. Resting at the Belvedere Funeral Home, Charlottetown, with visitation on Saturday, Aug. 27, 7-9 p.m. and at Dingwell’s Funeral Home, Souris, with visitation on Sunday, Aug. 28, 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Alexis Roman Catholic Church, Rollo Bay, Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Doctors Without Borders, The Gideon Bible Society or any charitable organization of your choice.
